UNC Metabolomics and Proteomics Core

Overview of Services

The UNC Metabolomics and Proteomics (MAP) Core facility provides services for the analysis of proteins from tissues, cells or other biological samples. We are available to the UNC community, as well as external customers worldwide. We’re committed to educating students and researchers in the field of proteomics and will work with you from initial experimental design through publication.

We offer an array of sample preparation and instrumentation services, as well as method development and in-depth consultation to help researchers optimize their experimental design. The facility is equipped with four state-of-the-art systems: a Sciex 5800 MALDI-TOF/TOF, a Thermo QExactive HF, a Thermo QExactive HF Biopharma and a Thermo Fusion Lumos Tribrid. In addition to the mass spectrometers, we have three Thermo Easy nLC 1200s and a 908 Devices ZipChip capillary electrophoresis device for up-front separation. We have an Agilent 1260 Infinity II HPLC for offline peptide fractionation. We offer several services including: protein identification, protein characterization, phosphoproteomics, large-scale proteomic profiling, intact mass analysis, and protein-protein interaction analyses. We can perform these services quantitatively using labeled (SILAC or TMT10plex/16plex) or label-free approaches. Comprehensive data analysis is provided through a variety of database search engines (Mascot, Sequest) and software packages including Protein Pilot, Proteome Discoverer, MaxQuant, Byos, and Scaffold. We can also aid in bioinformatics analysis using Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA), David, and Perseus.
